Fulham Works by Spacemade Creative Corporate Design: Custom Wall Mural, Window Graphics & 3D Lettering For A Co-Working Hub
Having previously collaborated with Spacemade, we were thrilled when the company reached out to Glyphics as a returning client, in need of custom signage to kit out its next co-working space in Fulham Broadway with everything from graphics to lettering.
Natalia, Head of Project Management there, gave us creative freedom to craft solutions intended to serve a binary purpose: reflect the individuality of the new space and seamlessly reinforce the identity of the umbrella brand.
The key feature would be a huge wall mural, and she kept the brief for it simple; summarising the spirit of this branch of Spacemade in one word - Jungle. With an interior that's dotted with large terracotta planters and crowned with a hanging herbarium in the lounge, this installation would serve to reinforce the green theme.
We took that as our cue to get down to monkey business. Here's an overview of how our lead designer, Damian, built concepts to complement the building’s professional yet lush vibes, while retaining the Spacemade brand - defined by its characteristic yet changeable geometric shapes.
Operating 11 locations across England, including 9 in London, Spacemade is a flexible workspace company that stands out for its commitment to fostering meaningful connections among its diverse audiences. But what does that really mean?
Jake Allnutt, Creative Director at Wildish & Co, who spearheaded Spacemade's albeit recent rebrand, puts it best:
“Rather than renting or owning the spaces, Spacemade facilitates the relationship between the landlords (building owners) and members (businesses). This creates a bespoke offering for the buildings, meaning they can better fit the needs of the communities”.
This unique business model differs from most competitors by placing heavy demands on creative design:
“as you have the individual location brand as well as Spacemade as an endorser brand.”
That sense of duality shaped our project with Spacemade too, despite working with their legacy brand guidelines.
Implementing Spacemade's design system
Fonts
Each building has its own standalone icon featuring the location name cast in a bold weight for a strong statement. This accent typeface is contrasted with Spacemade's logo and wordmark below in a clean slimline rendition. The size ratio between the two bits of branding is always consistent, and aesthetically pleasing thanks to the smart use of white space, ensuring readability across various applications.
Colours
The colour palette contrasts vibrant tones such as bluey greens and candy pinks, with classic neutrals like blacks and greiges - the juxtaposition represents an energetic approach to the co-working world and the people it serves.
Visuals
Geometric shapes are adapted as design elements to suit contextual needs, transforming from minimalist glass manifestations to the abstract building blocks of a wall mural. Circles, triangles, lines, and repeat patterns are used distinctively, crafting a modern aesthetic that delivers a clean, cohesive visual identity throughout.
This approach transforms functional spaces like meeting rooms and entryways into engaging environments that feel professional while maintaining a touch of playful energy. It’s a brand language that’s easy to replicate across multiple locations, ensuring consistency without sacrificing the individuality of each location.
These guidelines are designed to be intuitive - syncing harmoniously across digital platforms, marketing materials and physical spaces to form a parent brand. Meanwhile, their flexible application allows locations to maintain a unique sense of character, centring the users of each space and their experience in it.
For this project, we crafted a comprehensive suite of signage with the contemporary use of Spacemade’s signature geometric shapes at the heart of all our designs,
The solutions we developed encompass a variety of elements made to spec, meeting the functional and the aesthetic requirements that crop up throughout.
Safety Manifestations
Referencing Spacemade’s visual language, we incorporated custom geometric shapes into subtle frosted vinyl manifestations for all internal glass partitions. These provide privacy in meeting rooms while allowing light to filter through, only partially covering the glass to maintain an open, airy feel.
Miscellaneous Wayfinding
This streamlined wayfinding system demanded signage that balances function and minimalism, using clean typography with intuitive pictograms for effortless navigation. Our bespoke numbering system, door graphics and iconography maintain a stripped-back, modern aesthetic, while staying true to Spacemade's overall look-and-feel.
Full Colour Window Vinyls
To make the entrance pop, we applied colourful geometric shapes on the glazing of the shop front, ensuring that the external branding stood out yet synchronised with the overall design.
3D Acrylic Lettering
Both the front-of-house desk and the building’s exterior feature sleek 3D acrylic signage. The internal sign is matt black and jumps off of a fun on-brand wallpaper, enhancing the space’s welcoming vibe.
There are two external signs - one is a black and white badge icon that embosses a branded hoarding built to help establish a presence, bringing it a dash of dynamism, while the other is an illuminated white shop front fascia, ensuring visibility and inviting foot traffic.
Feature Wall Mural
The centrepiece of this project is a nature inspired wall mural that spans 25 feet across two walls in a light flooded room. The mural depicts a vibrant jungle scene with a tiger eyeing a toucan amidst stylised foliage. It's a playful design that ties together botanicals with Spacemade’s geometric branding, in homage to the urban greenery of the office.
Starting with some light research on plant species and jungle environments, Damian sketched out various leaves and wildlife elements. He digitised his hand-drawn illustrations and layered them with Spacemade’s distinct geometric shapes, being careful to stay true to the branding style.
By considering the room’s dimensions, layout and even furnishings, Glyphics was able to transform his concepts into a mural that integrates seamlessly with the space, while simultaneously injecting it with vibrancy.
Our favourite bit is the positioning of the tiger, which we purposefully placed to appear as if it’s walking on a desk at ground level, in the hope of bridging the gap between what is some of the largest artwork we've ever created and its very real environment.
Printed on hi-tack vinyl, the mural was installed by our team in a challenging space - a lofty room with irregular angles that opens up at the end of a long and narrow corridor. Squeezing in and setting up the necessary tower scaffolding presented a test, along with the room’s multiple angle changes, but the final result is a visually striking space that immerses users immediately upon entry.
Logistics were key due to the site’s location within a busy shopping centre / tube station. Coordinating the installation and managing access within the tight deadline required careful planning, but our experienced team ensured the project was completed on time and without disruption.
The resulting space exemplifies how effectively Spacemade's branding principles translate across locations. While the Fulham branch retains all the recognisable design elements that unify their identity, it also embraces a distinctive co-working character, brought to life by the striking jungle-themed mural.
This feature wall acts as both a statement piece and a visual anchor, drawing attention from tenants within and passersby on Fulham Broadway below, solidifying Spacemade as a local landmark.
Having worked with Natalia, a trusted partner who values creative freedom, Glyphics' collaboration with Spacemade is flourishing - much like the vibrant vinyl wall art at the heart of this brief - as the company scales. We continue to relish the opportunity to realise unique ideas for each of the company's locations, ensuring every project is both an evolution of their brand language and true to their overarching vision.
