THE LOWDOWN

Pizzabuzz, a DIY pizza parlour following the concept of eat-in café chains with a seat yourself service and counters where you can ‘build your own’ from the base up, was originally set up in Worship Street. Tapping into Shoreditch’s trendy vibe, the owner took the industrial space and commissioned a design company to bring it up a notch.

The creative director asked us to help transform it into a happy dining area full of colourful decorative touches, offset by rip-roaring wood fired ovens.

THE SPECS

With a brief from design company, Someone, in hand, we headed down to the Alphabeta building to figure out how to make the magic happen – menu boards, 3D metal logos and wall graphics were all on the menu.

There was a definite buzz about the place and amidst all the excitement, health and safety was our first consideration in what was essentially a building site with scaffolding towers and no light fittings. We knew it would be an obstacle to project manage the job with tradesmen scrambling over each other to complete their roles in time for opening. Strong relationships and good communication led to us working with and around them, and we always knew who was doing what, and when, which made navigating everything much easier – serving to increase our sense of anticipation in getting this oven-fresh addition to the area up-and-running.

For our part, we set about applying the finishing touches and tying everything together. First off we brought in a team of hand painters to cast bright blocks of colour, shaped like parts of the Pizza Buzz logo itself, on the top halves of each wall. We also built up metal logos and strategically installed them to be as visible as possible, spraying each letter in a different Pantone® hue to match the ‘pastel meets primary’ colour theme on the walls. We then produced the menu boards underneath the counter, building them to be interchangeable so that they could slide into the given framework and keep the menu seasonal. The result was a zingy restaurant with bubblegum vibes that both feels fun and is functional. Total pizza cake right?
