A CLEAR WINNER

Thanks to its low-profile, high-gloss optics, acrylic has proven itself popular for businesses that need signage with an air of the refined. Polished and professional doesn’t have to mean boring though. From transparent to semi-see-through and opaque colours, there are a range of acrylic finishes as well as options for customisation, such as the ability to incorporate lighting. Just provide us with your aesthetic and we will design a bespoke product that reflects your brand’s unique style and sensibilities.

Lightweight but resistant to breaking, acrylic is a very convenient signage solution that’s suitable for a range of conditions. Our clients often place acrylic signs at their building’s point of entry and reception areas, where they can scintillate in natural and spot lighting to give an instant facelift to any space. The material can easily be manipulated into all sorts of shapes and sizes, making it not just practical but preferable for large scale projects too, such as office wayfinding systems and in the context of exhibition signage.

What type of acrylic signs does Glyphics make?

At Glyphics, we find acrylic most frequently has three main implementations:

  • Glazed plexiglass boards or plaques made by mounting printed vinyl onto the back of clear acrylic panels - offering the same premium scratch resistant feel as glass while remaining affordable, this type of sign is highly replicable no matter the scope of the brief, manifesting as office directories and room identifiers.

  • Coloured acrylic panels that are then laser engraved and paint-filled with a contrasting colour for a bold look - this works really well when businesses want to identify their offices with a wordmark on a plaque.

  • Custom shapes, logos or lettering laser cut from panels of perspex, available in different thicknesses and colours - these are brilliant for when you want to build on-brand wayfinding systems and wall signage that’s clean and contemporary.

Hop over to our 3D page for chunkier iterations of acrylic - this page refers to lettering, logos or shapes laser cut from plastic sheets and to flat plastic panelling for boards and plaques. Whether you’re looking for a version of these, or for something else, we will be happy to explore it, fabricate it and install it for you,

FAQs: Acrylic Signs

What is acrylic and why is it used in signs?

Acrylic is also known by several other names, including acrylic glass, perspex, plexiglass, and PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate). These names all refer to the same type of plastic material, which is known for its clarity, durability, and versatility. These properties make it an excellent choice for use in signs, as it can withstand the elements and provide clear, legible text or graphics.

Are acrylic signs customisable?

Yes, acrylic signs can be customised to fit the specific needs of any project. They can be cut, moulded, and printed with text, graphics, and images to create bespoke, eye-catching signage.

What is an acrylic sign and where would you use them?

We can produce boards or plaques, made by mounting printed vinyl onto the back of clear acrylic panels, to create a sign with depth and gloss - the look and feel varies depending on your chosen print. This offers a lot of flexibility and therefore is one of the most common signs we make, especially as part of wayfinding.

We can also laser engrave and paint-fill coloured acrylic panels, similar to what we've done here with these bespoke magnets. Usually you’d choose one colour for the acrylic background and one colour for the paint-fill, for a bolder look. This works really well for businesses who want to identify their offices with a wordmark sign.

A common use of acrylic is to laser cut shapes or lettering in different thicknesses (for built up acrylic check out our 3D page). You can choose your colour from our range of acrylic or have them painted for you. These make brilliant wayfinding signs and wall mounted signs.

How are acrylic signs mounted or installed?

The specific method of installation will depend on the size and location of the sign, as well as the preferences of the customer. Acrylic signs can be mounted or installed using a variety of methods, including hanging or wall mounting. We usually recommend pop locator stand-offs for when you don’t want to see fixings on the face of your sign or aluminium stand-offs, which are visible and often are used as an aesthetic feature of clear plaques or boards.

How long do acrylic signs last?

By design, they’re extremely durable and are suitable for outdoors.

Can acrylic signs be used outdoors?

Yes, acrylic signs are suitable for use outdoors. They stand up well against water and UV rays, making them resistant to fading and discolouration.

What are the advantages of using acrylic?

  • Acrylic is optically superior to glass, as it is naturally free of tinting - this high clarity makes it a great option for displaying, protecting and bringing out the best in your branding or artwork.

  • Resistant to knocks, scratches and the weather, this plastic material is tougher than glass, making it useful for indoor or outdoor signage.

  • Although acrylic is significantly lighter in weight than glass, it’s also less fragile, lowering the risk of transportation and making installation easier. These qualities allow acrylic to last longer than other signage materials, which is an important factor for businesses to consider when investing in advertising displays and signage.

  • Acrylic can be cut into any shape or size, making it easy for us to customise a sign to the needs of our clients.
